Sales Person vs Website
We know the value to having personal interaction and face-to-face communication with customers and potential customers. Salespeople play a very important role. But so does your website. For many visitors, it is their first point of interaction and consideration to purchase. Our point here is to illustrate that for most companies their website is grossly underutilized and overlooked.
What Do You Invest In Your Website Annually?
Studies show that most companies with revenue between $1M and $5M spend less than 1% of their marketing budget on driving traffic to their website, if any at all. Then there were companies who did allocate a budget towards internet marketing, but put all their eggs in the PPC basket (yielding 0.5%-1.5% conversion rates), and nothing in organic search optimization.
Why?
We first suggest that companies in the $1-5M annual revenue range allocate approximately 5% of their total revenue towards marketing, and 15-20% of that towards organic search. This budget would be spend on SEO professionals (internal or external), content development, monitoring tools, link building and other costs except ad buying.
This would approximate to roughly $7,500 – $10,000 annually for $1M company and $37,500 – $50,000 for a $5M company. The remaining budget would be likely spread across social media, online advertising perhaps public relations and other branding activities.
So if you are willing to invest close to $100,000 into a rock-star salesperson, why not 1/10th to 1/3rd of that for activities that will increase traffic, leads and sales through your website?
Hiring SEO Consultants
Hiring an SEO consultant can help you put into action much of the technical enhancements and optimization techniques based on their understanding of search engines and past experience. Fees or rates can vary, but a good consultant is going to cost you $100-$150 per hour and more if they are industry experts and speak regularly on the subject. Do not be surprised if optimizing your website is going to cost a minimum of $2,000-3,000 per month with a minimum of a 6 month commitment. This is because the SEO process can be extremely time intensive and laborious, and for many sites, it can take a considerable amount of time to either generate the necessary content or inbound links to raise the profile, trust and authority of the site.
These consultants are surely needed if you lack the technical know-how, or even the time to do the work yourself. Well what if you had the time? What tools are available to aid me through the process in a step-by-step manner, with instructions that don’t talk over my head?
